About NAIADS

This image depicts a theory common during the 18th and 19th centuries, i.e., that the naiad was formed from unicellular algae that had developed cellular specialization to become multicellular creatures.

See the hair coming out of her eye ? Allegedly, the creature's ability to shapeshift into human form is far from perfect, and such flaws are inevitable. Wise swimmers and hikers will look for such flaws whenever they encounter anybody in or near water.

The truth is that such creatures were once numerous, and in fact they can develop anywhere algae are prominent ; however, they only thrive in unpolluted water, so they have been mostly wiped out by Industrial Age water pollution. In any case, these algal creatures are different from "real" Naiads, which are of two kinds.

The Greater Naiads (usually called Nereids) are fully sentient, extremely powerful Inter-Dimensional entities - they are said to be lesser gods, but little is known about them, and they are exceedingly rare on the physical plane. The Lesser Naiads (usually simply called Naiads) are fully physical but are also extremely powerful, and are said to be of Grigorii lineage ; needless to say, they hate being called "Lessers," so they call themselves the True Naiads or The Waterborn.

Sometimes, Naiads are confused with Water Vampires, drowned persons who come back as a kind of Moroi vampire, sleeping underwater in the daytime. These vampires are able to drink the blood of all types of water creatures for sustenance. However, these Moroi also need mammalian blood sometimes, and at those times a powerful craving sets in that must be satisfied, in order to maintain their aging resistance and supernatural powers. WVs are somewhat more likely to be found in fresh water, where mammals are less commonly found, so fresh-water WVs have to rely on animals and humans who come down to the water for whatever reason. Salt-water WVs usually hunt dolphins, whales, and seals - as well as fishermen.
