Prompt: S.W.I.T.C.H. This was my contest entry for a 2011 internal contest for a new doll line at Mattel. These are based on four sketches that I added to my portfolio to show that I could draw by hand for my Mattel interview in 2007. I figured that turning my sketches into a line of witches could make them relate to Monster High!
I was inspired by Victorian dolls, @viviennewestwood , my African and English ancestry and 80’s hip hop culture (hence the bling and hats cocked to the sides).
Switch stood for Secret Witch International Change Headquarters and the backstory was that it was an International after school program that would find young witches and teach them witch history and how to use their powers. You would learn that Hansel and Gretel were actually evil and that they were preying on a kind old lady-Lol. I designed a Victorian two story gingerbread house academy, and two seasons of dolls.
Laurel, the pink haired doll, was going to turn out to be made of wood, and you were going to find out later that she was Pinocchio’s daughter! She would spin off and have her own doll series with her fairytale friends (which included a Scottish were-girl with a skunk pet and twin girls in pinafores with knee high leather stiletto eyelet boots sharing a siamese floor length ponytail braid).
One of the judges (who shall remain nameless) told me that Laurel’s back story ‘made no sense’ and that the whole thing should be about her.
The same judge also said that ‘little girls don’t know who Vivienne Westwood is!’ as if that mattered.
I knew that I was being gas-lit and they wanted someone else to win, so I took it in stride when I lost.
I was definitely vindicated in 2013 when I saw how much of my aesthetics and concepts were incorporated into the final Ever After High brand. I’m just glad that it got made, and I love the fact that I subconciously influenced an infusion of hip hop and Africa (bold clashing patterns) into the brand, as well as the Victorian baby doll look that I wanted to introduce.
