It can be represented as either a man or a woman, depending on the region where the legend is told. Its origin lies in the indigenous Tupi-Guarani mythology. In Tupi, the word "caipora" (caapora) means "inhabitant of the forest." When it senses that a hunter enters the forest with the intention of hunting animals, it emits loud howls and screams, frightening these men. Its intention is to take care of these animals and protect the environment. Legend has it that its strength is greater on holy days and weekends. Caipora is a dwarf Indian with red hair and pointed ears. There are versions in which its body is entirely red, and in others, green. It lives naked in the forests and has the power to dominate and resurrect animals. Its main goal is to defend the ecosystem, so it sets traps and confuses hunters. Through various noises, it distracts hunters by offering false clues until they get lost in the forest. Additionally, it has the power to control animals and, therefore, scares them away when it senses that something bad may happen. On the other hand, there are different accounts to describe this folk character. In other versions, Caipora is described as a short, dark-skinned, and very hairy man. He appears mounted on a collared peccary and always carries a stick. There are still versions in which Caipora resembles Saci-Pererê and hops on one leg. In others, it has feet turned backward like Curupira. Therefore, in some places in Brazil, it is confused with Curupira. Interestingly, Caipora smokes. To please her and be able to hunt peacefully in the forests, some hunters bring twist tobacco for her. In the legend, they must leave the tobacco near the trunk of a tree. Although she allows them to hunt on that day, it is forbidden to kill pregnant females.
