Grandma sewed it and crocheted a green wool dress for it. Before Christmas, Riikka always disappears. On Christmas Eve, it comes back. Santa brings it. It has a new hair and a new face made of fabric. And a new dress and socks and garter belts. It sleeps next to me every night. I do know that there is sawdust inside it. But still, it is alive. Margareetta is made by my mother. It has a removable head bought from the city. Not rubber, because rubber flattens, says mom. And not made of papier-mâché either. A papier-mâché head suddenly develops bubbles if the doll falls. And gutta-percha heads always break. That’s why mom bought a plastic head and sewed it onto the body of an old doll. Margareetta is filled with cotton. Margareetta is quite a mean doll. The finest doll is Elisabetti. It is a puppet, and it has real hair. The hair is eel. Dad bought it in Helsinki and glued
