In the snow that fell by morning light
black footprints stretch far out of sight
like leaves in October’s fading glow
like trees in an old alley row.
The sun's blood trickles through the snow
frost stiffens the landscape below
a reddened river, shoreless and bare
slumbers slowly, fishless, there.
Only a long chain
of blackened tracks
tears the snow apart—
Who passed this way?
Did they find bliss
or a grave in the drifts of their heart?
While fires burned in hearths all round
a sweaty face fell to the ground—
That breath of spring reached even me,
as the earth beneath began to free.
It was a fine spectacle, I must say,
to watch him alone, through glass, that day.
But these nights, I find it hard to sleep,
so little snow has fallen deep.
And I, behind my pane, kept warm,
