Tomonoura was once one of the most bustling towns on the picturesque Setonaikai Sea, where ships and boats would wait for a favorable tide. Its stone lighthouse over 10 meters high protected sailors for more than 160 years. It is said to be the only place in Japan which retains its 19th-century port facilities, including stone steps for landing goods in high or low tide, a sea wall, a shipping watch-house, and an area for repairing ships.
The streets in the old town are lined with traditional large homes, storehouses, temples, and shrines. Taichoro, a guesthouse built around 1690 for foreign envoys, offers panoramic views of the Setonaikai Sea, and the islands of Sensuijima and Bentenjima.
Tomonoura was the backdrop for a Hollywood blockbuster and a Japanese TV drama series, and the townscape is said to have made its way into the Ghibli anime movie “Ponyo,” after director Hayao Miyazaki stayed at this port and brainstormed ideas for the film.
