  • Prompt: In the land of Cockaigne, the riverbeds flow with milk, honey, or wine instead of water (alluding, for instance, to Deuteronomy 6:3). Animals hop and fly through the air already cooked and ready to eat, complete with knife and fork stuck in their backs. Hans Sachs also tells of a "mountain of millet porridge." Houses are made of cake; cheese lies about instead of stones. Indulgence is the greatest virtue among the inhabitants of Cockaigne, while hard work and diligence are viewed as sins. Old age is remedied by the Fountain of Youth—as the saying goes: "He who has an old wife / should send her to the bath as well; / after bathing for barely three days, / she turns into a young lass / of about eighteen years." Consequently, the term "Cockaigne" is used today primarily in a figurative sense to denote a paradise of idleness and lounging about while eating. The concept itself appears as early as antiquity (in Greek comedy, and in the works of Lucian, Herodotus, and Strabo). Similar ideas surfaced as early as the 5th century BC in the works of Greek poets such as Telecleides and Pherecrates (where roasted fieldfares and small cakes flew straight into one's gullet). Virgil’s description of the *Aurea Aetas* (Golden Age) in his Fourth Eclogue also exhibits traits of the later Cockaigne legend, though it lacks the specific motifs of gluttony and excess. In German, the term *Gugelmüre* emerged during the Middle Ages to describe this utopian land of plenty. The mid-13th century saw the creation of the French *Fabliau de Coquaigne*, versions of which persisted in English and Dutch well into the 15th century. In the mid-14th century, Boccaccio described a land called Bengodi in *The Decameron*, a place where wine, sausages, cheese, and other delicacies were naturally abundant. (((One single image.
