  • Prompt: A painting in the style of the great Flemish Renaissance masters, with meticulous detail, luminous oil glazes, rich chiaroscuro and a strong sense of depth. Seen from behind, a man and a woman walk hand in hand, barefoot, up a narrow lane of uneven cobblestones that rises gently through a ruined medieval village. They are shown full-length, standing about half the height of the image, in the lower and central part of the composition. Their clasped hands are the luminous emotional centre of the painting. He wears a vivid, saturated orange-amber cloak; she wears a rich, saturated bronze-amber cloak. Their hoods have fallen back onto their shoulders. Each cloak is gathered at the waist with a thick, rough-spun cord tied in a simple knot, like the rope belts of Capuchin friars, with the loose ends hanging down. The viewpoint is very low, almost level with the cobblestones. The cloaks have a heavy, three-dimensional weight: deep folds fall from the shoulders, gather around the cord belts and sway naturally with each step. Although the couple is backlit, the cloaks never fall into silhouette. Their colour stays rich, warm and intensely glowing: the light passing around the edges and through the thick wool makes the amber and bronze burn like stained glass, the deepest folds keep a saturated, translucent glow instead of turning dark or grey, and a soft warm bounce light from the sunlit stones fills the backs of the garments with colour. A thin golden rim of light traces the shoulders, the hair and the edges of the cloaks. The sun, a newly risen golden disc, is just emerging through a gap between collapsed walls at the end of the lane, breaking through the dense, dark clouds of a long night and filling the sky with a vast, radiant dawn. Crumbling stone houses, broken arches and empty windows line the lane, cold and half in shadow, rendered in muted greys, ochres and blue-tinged umbers. The village is utterly desolate except for the couple's footprints, and those exist only behind them, in the lower foreground of the image, between the viewer and the figures. The cobblestones of the lane ahead of the couple, from their feet up to the sunlit gap in the walls, are completely bare: no flowers, no plants, only worn stone. Behind the man, vivid cyclamens bloom from every footprint; behind the woman, vivid white and pale gold lilies bloom from hers. The two trails stay distinct and clearly visible along the cobblestones at the bottom of the image. The flowers are fullest and most luminous in the footprints nearest the viewer, at the lower edge, and become small buds and tender shoots in the most recent steps right behind their heels, as if goodness keeps blossoming after those who have done it have passed. Warm dawn light caresses the figures, the flowers and the nearest stones, while the ruins stay sombre and subdued. Vivid colour is reserved only for the two cloaks, the flowers and the radiant sunrise. The overall mood is solemn, quiet and full of hope. A small calligraphic signature reading "Milo", painted in thin ochre oil as a traditional painter's inscription, in one lower corner.
