No dog toy in his mouth. Faint scattered oak leaf shapes are visible in background. The ground color in a pale desaturated tone is brushed as a highlight, ground color in dark saturated tone is brushed for shadow areas within the body of the animal with thick loaded brush, heavy impasto texture, paint physically raised from surface, visible ridge and drag marks in every brushstroke outside the face. The fur of the subject becomes increasingly loose toward outer edges, ground showing through between strokes, dissolving toward outer edges with strokes thinning and spacing apart, bare ground showing between marks, outer margins bare ground with gestural brush marks of accent, highlight and shadow colors, alla prima oil technique, academic animal portrait.
