Emoji request rejected with "not currently supported" error #77

When trying to use any emoji in comments to a picture, I got the message: "We apologize, but the emoji you requested is not currently supported." I'm not sure if this is a bug, but the emoji I wanted wouldn't work.
Resolved: Emoji were being stripped from comments by a change meant for dream titles. Comments never needed it — fixed today.
Happening with every emoji except the heart for me, too.
It happened to me too, several times.
This is rampent and the DDG folks aren't saying anything.... :(

That message was the site telling you the truth about the wrong thing: by the time your reaction arrived, the emoji had already been taken out of it, so what reached the part that reads reactions was empty — and an empty reaction is not one it supports.
On Thursday evening we shipped a change meant to protect dream titles. Most of our text is kept in an older format that cuts a line at the first emoji, so "Sunset 🌅 over the bay" was being stored as "Sunset " — 442 titles a week were losing their words that way. The change takes emoji out of what you type before it can do that.
Comments were caught by it, and they never should have been. Comments, replies and reactions are stored in a form that has always handled emoji perfectly — 820,000 comments on the site carry them. We were removing them from the one place they were safe.
It is fixed as of today, and nothing you had already written was touched. Dream titles still have their emoji removed, because there the alternative is losing the words that follow; we will fix that properly by changing how that column is stored.
The heart kept working because it is one of a handful of symbols that predate emoji and are stored differently.
