The mariner's ship is stranded in the ocean after he killed the albatross that had brought them out of an icy realm. Dying of heat and thirst, the sailors are excited to see a ship approaching. But the vessel is not of man's making; the ship harbors evil spirits, including a woman who seems dead, is that Woman all her crew? Is that a DEATH? and are there two? Is DEATH that woman's mate? Her lips were red, her looks were free, Her locks were yellow as gold: Her skin as white as leprosy, The Night-Mare LIFE-IN-DEATH was she, Who thicks man's blood with cold.
A hyperdetailed oil painting by Zdzislaw Beksinski depicts a ghostly tall ship sailing on rough, dark blue waters under a stormy sky with dark, dramatic clouds. On the deck of the ship stands a deathly pale woman with long, flowing blonde hair, wearing a tattered white gown. She is embraced by a skeletal, dark figure with a gaunt face and dark robes, who whispers into her ear. Below, in the foreground, a group of emaciated, bedraggled men in a becalmed ship reach out desperately towards the ghost ship, their faces filled with anguish and hope, as the waves crash around them. The scene is illuminated by an eerie, otherworldly light filtering through the clouds, creating a dramatic chiaroscuro effect. The overall mood is macabre, haunting, and sorrowful.
Far from helping the mariners, the Woman of Death causes all the sailors except the ancient mariner to perish, each fixing a look of loathing on the man who killed the albatross that had led the ship away from the land of ice and snow.
