The golden protective symbols in the old wooden beams still glowed erratically through the darkness of the house, while the iron door deep in the cellar held a narrow crack open. Beyond it, no silver mist was visible. No memories. No reflections. Only utter darkness. And in the midst of it, the two enormous golden eyes still hovered motionless in the blackness. Winny stood frozen in the middle of the living room. The warm female voice from the depths still echoed in her mind. Not from memories. Not from the mirrors. But from something much older. The two-legged stag slowly approached her. Its tall, slender form, in the golden light of the protective symbols, seemed almost like a living shadow of ancient wood and antler. The guardian's dark eyes rested motionless on the open cellar door. "It should never have answered," he said softly. The man without an echo moved slowly among the flickering mirrors. His black coat glided silently across the old floorboards, while the mirrors behind him briefly flashed images of alien worlds. Silver forests. Golden streams. A small red boat. Then the mirrors turned black again. The house trembled once more. This time more intensely. Dust trickled from the ceiling, while deep beneath the foundations a slow, metallic creaking sounded, as if ancient chains were being tightened underground. The false Winny was now crawling backward across the floor. Her body was barely formed anymore. Silver wisps of mist hissed from her face and vanished into the walls of the house. But suddenly she looked directly up at Winny. And for the first time, her gaze wasn't threatening. But filled with fear. "It remembers you now," she whispered hoarsely. Winny instantly felt an icy chill run through her hands. The golden protective symbols on the walls began to flicker erratically. Some had already gone out. Others suddenly glowed brighter than before. As if the house itself were fighting. The stag slowly raised his head. His mighty antlers cast long shadows across the living room ceiling. "The heart chamber is losing its balance," he murmured. The man without an echo stopped directly in front of the cellar door. For the first time, even he seemed uncertain. "No," he said slowly. "Not the heart chamber." He looked into the darkness behind the golden eyes. "The heart beneath it." At that same moment, somewhere deep under the house, a slow heartbeat began to pulse. Dull. Vast. Ancient. The walls trembled in rhythm with the sound. Winny gasped in shock. With each beat, the mirrors began to glow again. But this time they didn't reflect the other worlds. Instead, they reflected the house itself.
