Cause of extinction: Goats that humans introduced to Pinta Island and destroyed their habitats, rats (also introduced by humans) that preyed on young turtles, and humans that killed turtles for their meat.
The Pinta Island tortoise existed when Darwin visited the Galapagos in 1835. Unfortunately, a male named Solitario Jorge was the last pure specimen of this subspecies and died in 2015.
