ArtistChurrigueresque Psychosomatic Magicalism.((A masterpiece of unparalleled excellence, Pop-art style, Cheerful vibrant colors)), ((A surrealistic digital art piece in a vintage, textured style depicts a profile of a human head. The head is made of various architectural elements, with pipes, chimneys, and a miniature landscape on top. A small, robed figure stands on a raised platform, looking up at the large head. The background is filled with technical diagrams, equations, and abstract symbols, giving the composition a scientific and analytical feel. The color palette consists of muted, earthy tones with pops of color in the diagrams and symbols. The lighting is soft and diffused, creating a thoughtful and introspective atmosphere)), (The piece should evoke a sense of wonder and awe, Utilizing techniques reminiscent of Amazing Ultra detailed digital painting, Patchwork-style of Tomasz Setowski, Jean-Baptiste Monge and Hayao Miyazaki. As create by Hundertwasser, Zdzislaw Beksinski, Arthur Rackham, Paul Klee, Hayao Miyazaki and Josephine Wall).
At nine each morning, the Ministry delivered a sack of coal to the woman who dreamed the world.
Elias shoveled it into the furnace behind her ear. Above her forehead, a village basked in permanent afternoon. There was a church, a winding road, and a house he remembered living in before his wife disappeared.
The Ministry called her a General Intelligence. Elias called her Margaret, although this name caused a measurable loss of boiler pressure.
“You’re using too much fuel,” he said.
“I’m keeping someone alive.”
“Who?”
She opened one enormous eye.
“You wouldn’t approve of the expense.”
On Tuesday, the Ministry sent an inspector with a brass instrument for detecting souls. He pressed it against her cheek. The needle registered nothing.
Then he tested Elias.
“Interesting,” the inspector said.
“What is?”
“Your employment classification.”
That evening Elias found a document tucked inside his coat.
MAINTENANCE APPARATUS, HUMAN CONFIGURATION.
REPLACE WHEN SUBJECT BEGINS INVESTIGATING CHILDHOOD.
He remembered childhood perfectly: a yellow kitchen, his mother peeling an apple, the thin red ribbon curling onto the table.
He searched the Ministry’s illustrated catalogue.
There it was. Memory Package 14. Domestic Reassurance.
The apple cost extra.
“Am I real?” he asked Margaret.
Steam escaped her lips.
“Your wages are.”
He climbed the ladder to her forehead. The road was muddy. Rain had fallen in the village, though none had fallen outside.
His wife stood at the door of their old house.
“You took your time,” she said.
“Are you a memory?”
She touched his face. Her fingers were cold.
“I was hoping you could tell me.”
Beyond the village, the sky peeled away in narrow strips. Through the gaps Elias saw another platform, another furnace, another man carrying coal toward an immense sleeping face.
His own face.
Below, the inspector began closing valves.
“Unauthorized mental activity,” he announced. “We’ll resume the world after servicing.”
The church bell slowed. His wife’s hand grew lighter against his cheek.
Elias emptied his pockets. Two coins, a receipt, the Ministry document.
He struck a match.
For the first time in his life, the Ministry’s paper gave him something useful.
The furnace caught. His wife’s fingers tightened.
Far above him, someone knocked on a boiler.
“More coal,” a voice said.
Elias looked at the burning receipt. It listed the cost of his mother, the apple, and thirty-seven years of ordinary weather.
At the bottom was a small unpaid balance.
He could not imagine who would collect it.
