Gandhabba
(Verse 1)
In the hush between the breaths of time,
Where shadows fade and stars align,
A path of light begins to flow,
From lives once lived to seeds below.
Two hearts meet in a sacred flame,
A tender spark, a whispered name —
But more than flesh and blood must rise,
A silent traveler crosses the skies…
(Chorus)
Gandhabba — the wind of memory turning,
Not a soul, but karma burning,
Carried on a stream unseen —
A bridge between what’s been and what will be.
No self to hold, no form to claim,
Only moments passing like a flame —
Yet life awakens, soft and new,
As the journey carries through.
(Verse 2)
Final thoughts dissolve into night,
Cuti-citta fades into light —
Then rising gently, without a sound,
Paṭisandhi stirs in sacred ground.
Nothing travels, yet nothing ends,
The thread continues, bends and mends —
A tide of causes flowing on,
Old echoes singing into dawn.
(Chorus)
Gandhabba — the wind of memory turning,
Not a soul, but karma burning,
Carried on a stream unseen —
A bridge between what’s been and what will be.
No self to hold, no form to claim,
Only moments passing like a flame —
Yet life awakens, soft and new,
As the journey carries through.
(Bridge)
If there’s no “I” to cross the sea,
What is this dream of continuity?
Only waves upon the endless tide,
Rising, falling… side by side.
(Chorus)
Gandhabba — a breath, a distant spark,
Guiding light across the dark —
Not a soul, but a turning wheel,
A rhythm only time can feel.
From life to life the current flows,
Where one ends, another grows…
And in the cradle of love’s embrace,
A new dawn finds its place.

For a new life to begin, three conditions must converge. The union of the parents, the right biological timing, and a third element known as the Gandhabba. This Gandhabba is not a soul or spirit, but the momentum of a previously lived mindstream, carrying its accumulated Karma, now seeking the next place to arise. Without this factor, physical conditions alone are not enough for rebirth to occur. This leads to an ancient and profound question. If there is no permanent self, what is it that is reborn?
The final moment of awareness in this life, called the Cuti-citta, conditions the arising of the first moment in the next life, the Paṭisandhi-viññāṇa. Nothing material or permanent passes across. But the process itself continues without a break. It is a transmission not of self, but of conditions.
