Professional furry illustration. Clean expressive lineart. Soft cel shading. Character-focused composition. High quality furry artwork. A 20-year-old anthropomorphic deer, dressed in hiking gear, a butterfly net on his back, and a professional camera around his neck. He stands in a sparse forest of deciduous trees. In the buttom left corner, a branch with a ladybug is visible. The deer looks at the ladybug, holding the camera, ready to photograph it. Vibrant color chaos: every color is intentionally misplaced including deer fur, ladybug, camera, the sky, leaves, trees, clothes, and other elements. Clean expressive line art, soft cel shading, character-focused composition, high quality, whimsical, dreamlike atmosphere.

More about #Diversity Saturday. The World We Perceive

My younger brother lives with a form of color blindness. His favorite color is yellow, partly because it is quite rare for him to truly see it. He also has difficulty distinguishing shades of green and red, and when the two are placed together, they can merge into a single color altogether.

But notice that I deliberately use the expression “lives with” rather than “suffers from.” There is no suffering in it. This particular trait of his is rather a source of friendly jokes — mostly made by himself.

Living alongside him, I keep realizing once again that differences in the way we see the world do not arise at the stage of conclusions or judgments. They begin much earlier, at the stage of perception itself.

So, when dealing with the very same thing, we see differently, hear differently, feel differently...

Has anyone ever thought that the mystery of our musical preferences might depend on how many details of each note or beat we are actually able to hear? We are all accustomed to calling the sky blue, but does that blue look exactly the same to everyone? Are our tastes in food really a matter of preference, or do they depend on what our tongues can sense?

Every person has similar, yet at the same time unique, set of “sensors” that allow them to perceive things that no one else has ever perceived in quite the same way.

It is precisely this diversity of perception that gives rise to the variety of interpretations of the very same world we all live in.

By the way: my brother identified the creature in the image as a particular succinea form of Harmonia axyridis, with partial loss of melanization, reducing the number of spots to ten. Interestingly, the specimen also has the sixth form of thoracic dorsal pattern with a “+” type of melanization. This may be an adaptation of this invasive Asian species to the conditions of a cool late autumn in the northern part of Ukraine's Forest-Steppe zone.

So this particular trait does not prevent him in the slightest from doing what he loves: exploring and studying nature.
