The Sri Lanka Forest Gecko is a small, beautifully patterned endemic day gecko found primarily in the wet-zone forests of Sri Lanka. It is known for its leaf-like camouflage, with intricate patterns and earthy tones that help it blend seamlessly into tree bark, rocks, and forest leaf litter.
This species is diurnal, unlike many other geckos, and is often seen on shaded rock surfaces, mossy boulders, and tree trunks in dense rainforest. Its agility and quick movements allow it to escape predators and hunt for small insects such as ants, beetles, and spiders.
Cnemaspis kallima is highly habitat-specific, preferring cool, moist, and shaded forest environments with abundant rock outcrops. Because of this specialization, it is highly vulnerable to deforestation and fragmentation, which reduce the connected forest areas it needs for survival.
The species plays an important ecological role by controlling insect populations and acting as an indicator of healthy, undisturbed rainforest ecosystems. Conserving its habitat is crucial, as it does not adapt well to plantations or heavily altered landscapes.
