No matter what we face in the near future, this symbolic turning-of-the-clock separating a new year from all that went before, never fails to inspire me with hope. New Years eve gives us that cusp of a moment of significance: it provides relief in letting go of the past, in the sure knowledge we can't change it, and then celebration of the first new day in a new year of opportunities.
Auld Lang Syne. These three simple words—meaning “old,” “long,” and “since” in Scots—combine to form a phrase that translates loosely as “time gone by,” “old time’s sake,” or, in some contexts, “once upon a time. From:
