A panoramic oil painting on aged, unmounted canvas by Arkhip Kuindzhi, circa 1908. The scene depicts the vast, virgin steppe of Ukraine at the precise moment of dawn. The horizon is a soft, glowing sliver of pearlescent gold and pale rose, bleeding into a vast, cooling sky of atmospheric slate-gray and soft lavender. Low-lying morning mist clings to the flat earth, rendered with soft-focus, hazy brushwork. The foreground is a deep, tranquil silhouette of the wild grass, completely simplified and devoid of detail. The surface texture features authentic 19th-century craquelure and the heavy, layered impasto of the "Period of Silence". Visible evidence of the canvas being rolled, with slight pigment stress at the far edges. No photographic sharpness; a purely painterly, luminous atmosphere.
Part of my series "The Kherson Suite : Works in Honor of Arkhip Kuindzhi."
