Even though my first 4 chapter draft did not have any aliens, it was more of a story where a perfect VR game with both touch, smell that provided a complete experience - which inevitably lead to it being perverted for 'other' purposes. When I decided writing this as a full length novel I added aliens, as my intention was to address as many scifi tropes I had encountered [and disliked] as possible.
This included both the impossible way starships move and function, silly, unworkable and uneconomical ways of blowing up planets [Star Wars]. Not to mention where scifi authors who actually got a Ph.D make serious mistakes both in tech, possible human development, as well as what aliens would be like. My most major point would be how an advanced and energetic civ would avoid detection with all the searches we have done. This clip provide one scenario - cold life on world at distance from their star where only tiny amounts of energy is needed to power their heat exchange machines and they use light & laser for communication instead of radio.
