NASA Layoffs: A Step Back for Space Exploration
I am deeply disappointed by the indiscriminate layoffs of probationary employees at NASA, a decision that threatens not only the careers of over 1,000 scientists, engineers, and explorers but also the future of American role in space exploration.
These talented individuals joined NASA to push the boundaries of human knowledge, not to be treated as expendable. Space exploration is a long-term commitment, requiring stability, vision, and investment. Cutting the workforce in this manner serves no strategic purpose—it only undermines progress.
NASA has always been a unifying force, driving scientific discovery and inspiring generations. This reckless decision risks damaging not just the agency but also the entire space economy, which NASA has consistently fueled with a 3-to-1 return on taxpayer investment.
I stand with The Planetary Society in opposing this action and urge the administration to reconsider. Space exploration is about moving forward, not taking steps back.
What do you think about these layoffs? Let’s discuss.
