The Baku, a mythological creature from Japanese folklore, is often depicted with the body of a bear, elephant’s trunk, tiger’s paws, and ox’s tail , and entirely the sort of polite supernatural house guest who eats your nightmares and leaves the dishes.
In Japanese folklore it’s the dream-dietitian: whisper “Baku, eat my nightmare,” and it obligingly chews away your terrors with the calm efficiency of someone who’s read too many self-help books. Charming, useful, slightly alarming.
However heed a word of warning: don’t tempt it with too many midnight worries. Rumor has it that if you overfeed the Baku on anxieties, it develops a taste for petty desires and ambitions.
In short: brilliant at clearing all your nightmares. But like you should never feed a Gremlin after midnight, the Baku shouldn’t devour too much of the nasty stuff, lest you can say goodbye to your earthly ambitions for good, leaving you as shallow as many contemporary celebrities.
