The fires on Maui killed many people and burned many homes and businesses. That is the brutal reality and the real tragedy. But, right now, I am sharing a story about a tree. The banyan tree in the courthouse square of Lahaina, Maui, was planted in 1873. It has sheltered people for 150 years. After the Maui fires of this past week, news reports say that much of it still stands but that the experts do not know if it ultimately can survive the effects of the intense heat. I hope that it can live on to shelter the survivors of the fire and their children, and the future visitors to Maui.
