The Egyptians thought that the human spirit was made up of several elements, the most important of which are: ib, ka, ba, aj, ren, and sheut. In addition to these components there was the physical body, called ja or jat (jau in plural), meaning the set of bodily elements. It was also possible to acquire, through an initiation process, the Aj (Akh) and the Sejem (Sekhem).
The Sejem (Sekhem) was the manifestation of divine force and will; It could be achieved through initiation and hard work and gave the obtainer the power of the gods in this world. The priests, or magicians, who possessed it became bearers of divine force and will and its manifestation in this world.
Its symbolic representation is a sacred scepter, the sejem, which was generally carried by the pharaoh, or the high priest, in inauguration ceremonies, to consecrate and bless.
