Bathing machines first appeared around 1750, mainly in Britain, where they became common in seaside resorts. Although they were widely accepted as practical devices, they existed because of strong social norms around modesty. Even with bathing machines, women still faced significant shame and had to overcome societal expectations to bathe publicly. Bathing machines remained in use throughout the 19th century and gradually fell out of favor in the early 20th century, as swimwear became more revealing and social attitudes toward public bathing relaxed.
