What Could Go Wrong? U.S. Agriculture Minister Suggests Backyard Chickens Amid Avian Flu Crisis
As the U.S. faces a widespread avian flu outbreak affecting poultry farms across all continental states, the Agriculture Minister has proposed an unconventional solution to the egg price crisis: everyone should raise their own chickens. While this might sound like a quick fix, it raises several concerns.
Backyard poultry farming could unintentionally worsen the spread of the virus, as amateur farmers may lack the expertise to maintain proper biosecurity measures. Additionally, the risk of human exposure to infected birds could increase, especially since all 79 reported human cases so far have been linked to direct contact with animals.
While self-sufficiency is a noble idea, is this really the best way to tackle the crisis? What do you think? Share your thoughts below!
