ArtistAn orca whale leaps through a sky made of traditional patterns designating the sky developed by the Haida people, as the orca moves, its body transitions from the color and shapes of the real whale to the traditional depictions of the orca favored by Haida artists. A group of five orcas, one large and four smaller, are leaping out of the water in a dramatic and ethereal scene. The largest orca, positioned prominently in the foreground, is adorned with intricate red, black, and white patterns resembling Indigenous art, particularly Pacific Northwest Coast formline designs, giving it a mythical appearance. Its body is partially black with white patches, consistent with natural orca markings, but overlaid with these stylized patterns. Water splashes around its tail as it emerges from the sea.
