ArtistAn image in the style of Norman Rockwell: Philip Catelinet holds his bass tuba, he is performing in the living room of Vaughn and Ursula Williams. Catelinet has a look of consternation on his face because no sound is coming out of his tuba. Instead, a tiny panicked ginger cat with its fur raised in alarm, leaps out of the bell of the tuba. Vaughn Williams, who was 81 years old at the time and his wife, Ursula who was 38 years younger than Vaughn, explode in delighted laughter.
All the cat lovers will realize that this could only be a true story. Philip Catelinet, the eminent multi-instrumentalist had performed the new Williams Bass Tuba concerto for Vaughn and Ursula Williams in their parlor. Unbeknownst to the three, Crispin, the Wiliams' kitten, had decided while the group was enjoying their tea, to get into the bell of the bass tuba and have a snooze. After tea, Williams had asked Catelinet to run through some measures again, Catelinet picked up the tuba and was astonished when his best efforts failed to produce any sound at all. The little kitten was blocking the sound and came out as only startled kittens can! Thanks to the eminent musician, conductor and beloved music pedagogue, Bill McGlaughlin for this story. Bill McGlaughlin recently passed away and a great light has left the world.
A hyper-realistic painting captures a humorous domestic scene in a richly decorated, old-fashioned interior. A man with curly dark hair and glasses, dressed in a black tuxedo and bow tie, sits holding a brass tuba with a wide-eyed, surprised expression, looking slightly to his right. From the bell of the tuba, an angry, snarling orange kitten with flared fur leaps outwards, its claws extended. To the right of the tuba player, an older man with white hair, dressed in a grey suit, laughs heartily with his mouth wide open. Beside him, an older woman with dark, curly hair, wearing a pearl necklace and a light blue dress with sheer sleeves, also laughs with her hand clasped to her chest. Behind them, a large oil painting in a gold frame depicts an older man sitting pensively. To the left of the tuba player, a tall stained-glass window in muted colors extends from top to bottom. A table lamp with a patterned shade sits on a small wooden table to the left. In the foreground, on a patterned table, there are sheets of music, a closed book, a teacup with a floral design on a saucer, and a vase filled with an assortment of colorful flowers including roses and daisies
