Details:
The Sri Lanka Green Frog is a semi-aquatic amphibian known for its bright green coloration and powerful jumping ability. It thrives in still or slow-moving freshwater habitats—places with clean water, grassy edges, and plenty of vegetation. The species is active both day and night, feeding on insects, small invertebrates, and occasionally tadpoles.
Though widespread in some wetland-rich areas, its populations are declining because its preferred habitats are disappearing rapidly. Wetlands and marshes are frequently drained for agriculture, construction, and urban expansion. Paddy field pesticides and chemical fertilizers also seep into waterways, poisoning frog populations and reducing insect availability.
The species is sensitive to water quality; even small increases in pollution or changes in water flow can disrupt breeding. During the breeding season, males call from the water’s edge, and eggs are laid in floating clusters, making them vulnerable to water contamination and habitat disturbance.
Protecting freshwater ecosystems, reducing chemical runoff, and preserving natural marshlands are essential for the long-term survival of this amphibian—one of Sri Lanka’s understated but ecologically important species.
