Arcimboldo made me out of books. It was cheaper than childhood.
An open volume became my hair, which was a considerable improvement. My nose contained a chapter I had always meant to finish.
I stood beside the curtain, waiting for somebody to return my left shoulder. It was overdue.
At night I heard the pages moving inside me. Sometimes a woman I had loved walked through the index looking for her maiden name.
Nobody borrowed me.
They said I was difficult to carry and had no plot.
One morning a small boy opened my forehead.
“Is this where you live?”
I wanted to say yes, but the bookmark had slipped out of my mouth.
He put it back.
That was the kindest thing anybody had done all winter.
