The upright posture, the big rough hands, the carefully curated patchwork clothing, the bond between dog and man. A long hard life and the fight for dignity within the uncertainty of a fractured social contract.
This made me think of all those carefully posed formal portraits of wealthy people that proclaimed their high status. Thank goodness for the impressionists who said, let's paint what we see in everyday life! And the expressionist who said, let's reveal what lies beneath! And the modernists who said, let's demonstrate the power of form and color to explore meaning and the truth in society!
