Well, due to my strategy of correctness before speed, I have discovered several bottlenecks, the worst of which is the screen scrolling which takes 120 microseconds per line :( This is because I've used BIOS calls for correctness, rather than loops of REP MOVSW's and VGA address translations. So, another little project spins off in the background : to rewrite the TTY driver. While I'm at it I'll have a go at the HDD driver as well, as I have a number of old "sacrificial" 6GB hdd's which I can DBAN and reload any number of times :)
