ArtistChapter 27 – The Road That Knocked Back Part 2 – The Traveller Who Followed the Quiet Road USE EXACTLY FOUR REFERENCE IMAGES: CR-M1 – Morksik, CR-M2 – Borstel, CR-M4 – Hopsy, CR-M16 – Grimmeldorn. The four foreground characters must closely reproduce their reference images. Do not redesign, humanize, simplify or change their established species, faces, proportions, clothing or equipment. CRITICAL: Borstel must match CR-M2 exactly as the established upright anthropomorphic character with clothing and equipment — NEVER a generic natural hedgehog. Morksik must match CR-M1. Hopsy must match CR-M4 including his large leather pouch and accessories. Grimmeldorn must match CR-M16 including his characteristic dark moss-covered appearance and glowing red eyes. Create a 4:3 realistic painterly fantasy storybook illustration deep inside the supernatural Mistmoor fog. Show exactly four foreground companions standing on the mysterious silent middle road: Morksik, Borstel, Hopsy and Grimmeldorn. The road has descended into an eerie corridor bordered by tall motionless walls of silver-grey mist. Ancient stone steps begin beneath the companions’ feet. Several steps carry a subtle carved symbol of a circle divided into two halves. The dramatic focus is the mysterious traveller standing farther ahead on the road. The traveller wears a weathered dark-brown coat and lowered hood, but has now pulled the hood partly back, revealing a tired pale ordinary face with a thin scar crossing one eyebrow. The traveller holds a lantern burning with an unnatural white light. Hopsy stands opposite the traveller holding his old brass lantern. Its flame is changing from warm gold toward cold white, while the traveller’s white flame begins changing toward gold, visually suggesting that something mysterious is passing between the two lanterns. Morksik watches this exchange intensely. Borstel stays close to him, suspicious and uneasy. Grimmeldorn stands protectively beside them, black moss slightly raised and red eyes fixed on the traveller. Through the translucent mist walls on one side, show faint ghostlike silhouettes of the four companions walking on a parallel road, like an impossible reflection. These must remain indistinct silhouettes only, NOT detailed duplicate characters. Far behind them, two curving stone roads are barely visible through the mist, beginning to approach the silent road from opposite sides. Atmosphere: wet ancient stones, moss, twisted thorn branches emerging from fog, deep cinematic perspective, soft volumetric mist. Warm and cold lantern light meeting in the centre creates the main illumination. EXACTLY FOUR detailed foreground companions + ONE mysterious traveller. Parallel versions are only vague translucent silhouettes, never additional detailed characters. NO Archivara. NO Eldren. NO generic hedgehog. NO duplicate detailed heroes. NO additional travellers. NO readable text. Bottom-right: small unobtrusive white full-body unicorn watermark with “AI by Unicorngraphics”.
The Morks of Mistmoor
Chapter 27 The Road That Knocked Back Part 2 The Traveller Who Followed the Quiet Road
The middle path remained silent. Behind them, the two answering roads slid through the mist like stone snakes. Borstel glanced over his shoulder. “Roads should not move.” “You have said that about several things lately,” Hopsy replied. “Because several things lately have behaved badly.” Morksik kept walking. The stones appeared only a few steps ahead and vanished behind Grimmeldorn. Eldren’s map showed the same narrow silver line, but the false roads twisted around it without touching. Archivara held the book open. THE WITNESS REMEMBERS THE ROAD THAT NEVER ANSWERS remained on the page. Beneath it another sentence formed: SILENCE IS NOT SAFETY. “Naturally,” Borstel muttered. Hopsy’s wooden cup knocked once inside his pouch. Nothing answered. They continued. The mist no longer drifted across the road but stood in motionless walls on either side. Shapes appeared inside it: houses, trees, travellers, fragments of places they knew. Morksik saw the ancient well. Borstel saw the Archive entrance. Hopsy stopped when a familiar kitchen table appeared in the fog, covered with cakes. “Keep walking,” Morksik said. “I know. I am merely confirming that evil understands presentation.” Grimmeldorn raised one hand. Ahead stood the figure with the white lantern. This time it was closer. Its coat was dark brown, torn at one shoulder, and its boots were covered in pale dust. A narrow scarf hung around its neck. Its face remained hidden beneath a lowered hood. “Do not knock,” Archivara whispered. The figure did not. It simply turned and began walking away. The quiet road appeared beneath its feet. Borstel frowned. “Suspiciously convenient.” “Everything is,” Morksik said. “Follow.” They had gone perhaps fifty steps when Eldren stopped. His paper face crinkled. “The map says we are behind ourselves.” Morksik turned. “Explain that badly.” “We left Nebelmoor here.” Eldren pointed to one silver mark. “We are here.” His finger moved to another directly beneath it. “Same place. Different road.” Archivara looked around. The mist walls had become translucent. On the other side, six figures walked beside them: Morksik, Borstel, Hopsy, Archivara, Grimmeldorn and Eldren. Their doubles moved in perfect rhythm on a road several paces away. Borstel stared at himself. “I dislike him.” “He is you,” Hopsy said. “Exactly.” The other Morksik suddenly looked directly at them. The real Morksik stopped. His double did not. It raised one hand and pointed ahead. Then all six disappeared. The stranger with the white lantern had stopped too. “Who are you?” Morksik called. No answer. “Were you the one beyond the door?” The lantern lifted once. Archivara whispered, “One knock meant yes before.” “But it did not knock,” Grimmeldorn said. The figure lowered the lantern and continued. The road descended. Soon the stones became narrow steps.
