ArtistA modern doctor's office. A male doctor in a lab coat and with a stethoscope around his neck sits behind the desk. In front of the desk a female patient in a business suit. The female patient's thyroid glands are visible and spreading away from them, flowing through the female patient's body molecules of triiodothyronine and thyroxine. A speach bubble above the male doctor says: "It's just a bit of depression!"
Hyperthyroidism is an overproduction of thyroid hormones caused by a number of underlying conditions such as Graves' disease or Thyroiditis. Although Hyperthyroidism has many physical symptoms such as weight loss, frequent bowel movements, shaky hands or excessive sweating (), because most of the patients are female, their mostly male physicians tend to focus on the few symptoms they can associate with mental disorders: irritability, nervousness, trouble sleeping and fatigue. Thus many sufferers are diagnosed with conditions such as depression or anxiety (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10517880/). Instead of proper treatment, they get stigmatized.
To add insult to injury, the weight loss is treated as a sign of health, even when patients are painfully underweight.
