Whale 52 (named after his song frequency at 52Hz) lives in the north Pacific. Scientists have been tracking him on and off for more than 30 years – listening to his vocalizations as he swims back and forth across his patch of ocean, calling into the void and waiting for a reply, which is only seldom responded to. Numerous studies have proven that commercial shipping noise interferes with the ability of large whale species to communicate. This leaves the whale confused and vulnerable, sometimes getting killed in the cross line of the shipping traffic lanes. The question is, are we listening? Can we look at what we put in our shopping baskets, and know exactly how it got there? Has the whale the ability to speak to people, and when will we finally understand the song.
