“I’ve always loved the night, when everyone else is asleep and the world is all mine. It’s quiet and dark—the perfect time for creativity.”
― Jonathan Harnisch, Porcelain Utopia, 2015
Envision a blend of a mentally ill mind with unsurpassed resiliency and fiery intellect and your result would be Jonathan Harnisch, who has proclaimed himself the King of Mental Illness. A schizophrenic with Tourette's syndrome, his semi-autobiographical protagonist, Benjamin J. Schreiber, is presented as a twisted character treading an otherwise ordinary world in what Harnisch calls an 'Alibiography'. Writing fiction is clearly therapeutic for him, and the authenticity of Harnisch’s voice bursts through the tangles and repetitions of his language, providing a unique window into mental illness.
