Ecologist Piet Bremer passionately advocates for the restoration of old coppiced oak forests. On the outskirts, nestled between upscale homes and a riverside campsite, lies a sandy mound shaped during ancient times. At 13 meters above sea level, it's a local high point. This spot hosts one of the region's oldest forests. "Don't expect an imposing forest with thick trees," warns Bremer. The area is covered with trimmed oak stumps sprouting young shoots. Though modest, they represent an ancient and rare forest habitat. "There are perhaps fifteen original coppiced oak forests left, maintained in this way. We once had thousands of hectares of coppice, especially in sandy soils. Almost all has vanished." Coppicing is a traditional forest management method that served two purposes: harvesting wood and oak bark. "Wood was a primary fuel for centuries. Every ten years, stems were cut about half a meter above the ground, producing manageable firewood. The stump regrows, and after ten years, you have more wood to harvest. Coppice management ensured a constant supply of wood."
