More about KDS5000 The Segs (Volumes 1 and 2)

KDS5000 (Kitchen Design System 5000) was a CAD package which ran on the Apple ][, using a heavily-customised DOS (which later inspired the ::SHE+ILA:: project). Later versions contained a hardware-assisted matrix multiplier card in slot 7 in order to speed up the perspective drawing on the screen and plotter.
The datastore comprised two 5+1/4 inch floppies: Disk Volume 1 contained the kernel (which installed into the Apple Language Card, a 16K or 32K ramcard), and a shape library common to all manufacturers catalogues. It also held the ::CHOICE::, ::DESIGN::, and ::COSTNG:: Segs, which formed the user interface to the package.
Disk Volume 2 contained the kitchen manufacturer catalogue, containing the available selection of kitchen units, along with their sizes and colours. It would also hold the saved kitchen for a particular customer. In order to design for several different customers concurrently, this could be copied onto a Disk Volume 9, which contained several complete customer datastores.
Other Disk Volumes were used internally for administrative purposes, for example an "Update" application, by which we (or a kitchen manufacturer) could input and/or amend an entire kitchen catalogue, including prices, ranges, colours, and textures (profiles). There was also a Backup Volume, which audited and kept track of our Users and which Version of the System they had; and a Sort/Merge utility which reorganised the data structures with in a Volume in order to decrease Disk Access time and optimise Disk Space.

Volume 1 contained the following Segs (segments, think of "files") :
::BOOT:: The second-level bootstrap, run at powerup
::KERNEL:: The 6502 machine code clever stuff
::COMPRO:: The Command Processor
::CHOICE:: The Uniprompt Form used for selecting carcase colour, range, and unit types etc.
::DESIGN:: The 3D graphics interactive pointer-driven unit-placement editor
::COSTNG:: The costing and invoicing program, which also printed the spec for the fitters
::SHAPEF:: The 3D shape library (see previous drawing)
::INDEXS:: The index-sequential helper allowing rapid selection by manufacturer's unit name

Volume 2 contained the following Segs :
::SWAP:: Used internally to the implementation
::MEMDMP:: Working memory dump of current customer's units and co-ordinates
::DEALER:: Kitches dealer's name and address etc.
::CUSTMR:: Current customer's name and address etc.
::URANGE:: List of ranges/styles for this manufacturer
::CARCOL:: Available carcase colours for each range
::WTPCOL:: Worktop colours for each range
::DORSTY:: Door styles for each range
::UNITFL:: 3D shapes of all kitchen units for this manufacturer
::UNAMES:: Names of those kitchen units, linked index-sequentially
::MANFSZ:: Manufacturer sizes (see previous drawing)
