Kali is probably a newer myth based on an old fire-goddess, which -at least to me- explains the fiery background and hair.
She is described as terrible and beautiful.
She is the goddess of death and destruction, the discarded dark side of Parvati and she saved the world with her long tongue.. We tend to forget that last bit :)
