Overview

The Sri Lanka Spiny Lizard (Calotes nigrilabris) is an endemic agamid lizard found only in the cool, misty highland forests of Sri Lanka. It is distinctive due to its robust body, spiny crest along the neck and back, and its remarkable ability to blend into moss-covered tree trunks.

This species is an important indicator of healthy, undisturbed montane forest ecosystems.

Habitat & Distribution

Primary Habitat: Wet-zone montane and sub-montane cloud forests.

Elevation: Most common above 1000 meters.

They spend much of their time perched on trees and shrubs, rarely descending to the ground unless necessary.

Appearance & Identification

Size: Medium-sized lizard.

Coloration: Greenish to brownish body with darker mottling, perfectly adapted to mossy bark.

Crest: A line of sharp, prominent spines from neck to back.

Mouth & Throat: Often shows darker (sometimes blackish) coloration on lips, which contributes to its scientific name nigrilabris (“black-lipped”).

Males may display brighter color tones during territory defense or mating.

Behavior & Diet

Arboreal: Lives mostly on tree trunks and branches.

Diet: Primarily insectivorous (beetles, ants, caterpillars), may occasionally consume other small invertebrates.
