***Sri Lanka Spiny Lizard - Calotes nigrilabris***

Short: Endemic arboreal lizard with a spiny crest; threatened by habitat loss.

Facts: Habitat: Wet-zone highland and sub-montane forests;

Threats: Deforestation, climate change, habitat fragmentation.

Overview

The Sri Lanka Spiny Lizard (Calotes nigrilabris) is an endemic agamid lizard found only in the cool, misty highland forests of Sri Lanka. It is distinctive due to its robust body, spiny crest along the neck and back, and its remarkable ability to blend into moss-covered tree trunks.

This species is an important indicator of healthy, undisturbed montane forest ecosystems.

Habitat & Distribution

Primary Habitat: Wet-zone montane and sub-montane cloud forests.

Elevation: Most common above 1000 meters.

Key Locations:

Horton Plains
Nuwara Eliya forest patches
Knuckles Mountain Range (upper areas)
Peak Wilderness / Sri Pada forest

They spend much of their time perched on trees and shrubs, rarely descending to the ground unless necessary.

Appearance & Identification

Size: Medium-sized lizard.

Coloration: Greenish to brownish body with darker mottling, perfectly adapted to mossy bark.

Crest: A line of sharp, prominent spines from neck to back.

Mouth & Throat: Often shows darker (sometimes blackish) coloration on lips, which contributes to its scientific name nigrilabris (“black-lipped”).

Males may display brighter color tones during territory defense or mating.

Behavior & Diet

Arboreal: Lives mostly on tree trunks and branches.

Diet: Primarily insectivorous (beetles, ants, caterpillars), may occasionally consume other small invertebrates.

Behavior:

Prefers cool and moist forest air.
Generally calm and slow-moving unless threatened.
Uses camouflage as its main defense.

Reproduction

Lays eggs in moist soil or leaf litter, typically a small clutch.

Juveniles are miniature versions of adults, already able to climb immediately after emerging.

Threats

Major threats to the Sri Lanka Spiny Lizard include:

Deforestation for agriculture, tea plantations, and development
Fragmentation of montane forests into isolated patches
Climate change warming high-elevation forests (critical risk due to narrow temperature tolerance)
Predation by invasive species (feral cats, rats, etc.)

Because this species lives primarily in high-altitude ecosystems, it is highly vulnerable to even small shifts in climate and humidity.

Conservation Notes

Found in some protected areas (Horton Plains National Park, Peak Wilderness).

Conservation efforts should focus on:
✔ Preserving montane forest corridors
✔ Preventing illegal logging and firewood extraction
✔ Long-term climate and microhabitat monitoring
