Fëanor (whose name means "Spirit of Fire" in Quenya) was the greatest craftsman, gem-smith, and indeed, arguably the most gifted and powerful of all the Elves. He was the eldest son of Finwë, the first King of the Noldor.
Fëanor's genius was immense, but so was his pride and fierce will. He created many wondrous things, including:
The Tengwar script, the elegant writing system used throughout Middle-earth.
The Palantíri (the Seeing Stones).
Most famously, the Silmarils: three magnificent jewels that captured the light of the Two Trees of Valinor (the ancient source of light in the Blessed Realm). These jewels were unrivaled in beauty and power, and Fëanor cherished them above all else.
It was the theft of the Silmarils by Morgoth and the subsequent murder of Fëanor's father, Finwë, that led Fëanor to swear a terrible oath. This Oath of Fëanor bound him and his seven sons to recover the Silmarils at any cost, driving them to defy the Valar, commit kin-slaying against other Elves (the Teleri) to steal their ships, and ultimately lead a large host of the Noldor back to Middle-earth to wage war on Morgoth. This tragic and bloody conflict shaped much of the First Age of Middle-earth.
