The end of COVID-era assistance is fueling a sharp rise in evictions in the US. Stimulus packages and protective programs that aided struggling Americans during the pandemic expired in 2023, contributing to worsening living conditions and increased homelessness. Every ethnic group has endured an increase in homelessness. In 2023, the Asian community experienced the most significant percentage increase (64 percent), while Hispanics/Latinos saw the most significant surge in raw numbers (an additional 39,106 people). And 111,620 children were without homes in America last year. At its core the homeless problem in the US is the result of failed policies: severely underfunded programs that have led to shortages of affordable housing, wages that do not keep up with rising rents and housing costs; inadequate safety nets; and inequitable access to quality health care.
