ArtistSurreal oil painting. As a boy I succeeded in joining the expedition of the well-known explorer of Altai and Mongolia, V. V. Sapojnikoff, in the capacity of collector-zoologist. With him I first saw nature in the wild, often visiting places not yet shown on maps; one summer we travelled through roadless territory for more than 2,000 kilometers on horseback. This was the beginning of my work of exploration, which I later carried on independently. For a while I acted as a zoologist for such expeditions and then became the leader in a series of scientific expeditions to the Altai and Sayanskii Mountains, to Mongolia, to the Tian-Shan Mountains, the Amur, the Ussurisk region on the Siberian-Manchurian border and to Lapland.
A painting depicts a panoramic mountain landscape with a winding river valley, lush green forests, and a group of travelers with horses. The sky is bright blue with fluffy white clouds. In the foreground, a man in a brown coat and hat sits on a rock, holding a pouch. Another man in a green coat and hat stands nearby, holding a long stick. Further back, a man on horseback in a brown vest and hat is visible. To the right, another man on horseback in a bright red robe and hat holds a sword, and beside him, a man on horseback in a blue robe and hat has saddlebags. Between them, a young man in a brown jacket and hat stands, gently touching the bridle of a white horse. A small white lamb stands next to the young man. In the distant background, more travelers on horseback are seen among the trees. The ground is covered with green grass and various wildflowers in shades of purple, pink, and yellow. The mountains are snow-capped with visible rock formations and trees on their lower slopes. The overall style is reminiscent of a classical painting, with rich colors and detailed textures.
