Diana: (bitter laugh) Ah, Mr. Grim Reaper, the Great Leveler, here you are at last. I’ve cheated you three times already. Survived, thrived. And what is my reward? People I deeply care about, are dropping like flies. I buried my father, my father-in-law, my husband, my dear friend Marc and my beloved dog Milo, within a three year period. I’m done. Can’t take it anymore. Push me over the edge.
Grim Reaper: (leans on scythe) Three miraculous escapes? Impressive résumé. I’d love to terminate your earthly contract, honestly, but the cosmic office put you on hold. Too much paperwork and bad coffee.
Diana: On hold? Give me one reason that isn’t a cynical shrug.
Grim Reaper: You’re tangled in other threads. Cut you now and the pattern unravels. Or someone upstairs misplaced the stamp. Take your pick.
Diana: So I’m a loose thread, a pebble. You keep me for someone else’s peace?
Grim Reaper: Maybe to preserve a truth, maybe to prevent a terrible mess, maybe because your stubbornness and resilience are so entertaining. All true. All evasive or false. It’s all a big fugazi.
Diana: You sound like a vile lawyer. I hate you for it, and I suppose I thank you, too in a way.
Grim Reaper: Hate me, thank me, scream at me, keeps my ledger compelling. When the hour comes I’ll be blunt, swift and “deadly”. Until then: live inconveniently. Irritate me, provide me some spicy entertainment. I’m bored to death. Literally.
Diana: (straightens) Fine, Mr. G. I’ll live on the fast lane, always looking for an intricate angle to meet up with you in Heaven. Or Hell.
Grim Reaper: (a hollow chuckle) Wow, sounds promising. But, don’t bite off more than you can chew. Keep breaking things open, pebble. I’ll be here, properly disgruntled. Waiting. Watching over you. Until the time is right. You can’t escape, you know that, right?
Diana: (defiant) I know more than I should. You’ll get your pound of flesh. And more. Now, get out of my face. I have some serious shit going on.
