More about “Bread and Roses”

The slogan “Bread and Roses” comes from a speech given by New York trade unionist Rose Schneiderman in 1911: The worker needs bread, but she also needs roses. [1] It was included in the poem Bread and Roses by James Oppenheim, which was published in American Magazine in the same year and is dedicated to women in the West. In 1912, Bread and Roses became a slogan during the strike of more than 20,000 textile workers in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Since then, the poem has been part of the international labor movement and the women's movement (International Women's Day, World Women's Day).
When we march, march,
we bring our great days closer.
For the elevation of women means
the elevation of humanity.
No longer: here the slave to work and there the idler –
ten toiling while one rests,
but [equal] participation in the joys of life! Bread and roses! Bread and roses!
