Corridor of gleaming jade, carved with runes and pillars stretching into phosphorescent shadow, black-haired barbarian stands defiant, stripped to waist and corded with scars. His broad steel sword flashes in jade light and lightning as he braces for onslaught. Dust and fragments of jade crunch under his sandaled feet, shaken loose by tremors of monster filling passage. Beast is colossal pale worm, segmented leviathan whose pallid body ripples with obscene power. Its slick, wet hide shines with toxic sheen, folds contracting like muscles of titan serpent. From its blunt eyeless head yawns a single cavernous lipless mouth, ringed with long inward-pointing fangs dripping venom in threads. Head surface remains smooth and simple around maw, without external sensory organs or ornament. As it lunges, jade corridor shudders, pillars split, and shards explode outward in showers of green flame. Worm is not reptilian nor dragon-born, but blind horror of pallor and scale, obscene in its mass and hunger. Barbarian lowers into warrior’s crouch, hair whipping about his shoulders, steel blade raised in defiance. Lightning arcs through ruins beyond, strobing air in electric flashes freezing each moment in brutal tableau: man silhouetted against pale colossus, jade splinters spinning through haze, steel blade cleaving up into monster’s segmented flesh. Venomous ichor fountains across carved walls, hissing where it eats into jade glyphs, filling air with acrid stench. Every breath is peril; every step, a wager against annihilation. Lighting is harsh, alien, theatrical: jade phosphorescence saturates scene in green glow, lightning freezes figures in white glare, while bare steel catches sharp white lightning and reflected jade light. Foreground: barbarian, crouched and braced in defiance. Midground: worm’s head, mouth cavernous and dripping. Background: jade corridor collapsing, carved reliefs dissolving in ichor. Tone is mythic and violent: meeting of barbarian strength and primordial abomination, rendered in maximalist, pulp epic register. --mod digital illustration --mod stylized realism --mod sword and sorcery --mod heroic framing --mod chiaroscuro lighting --mod atmospheric depth --mod narrative consequence --mod architectural scale --mod rubble detail --mod elemental lightning --mod toxic venom detail --mod pulp energy --mod vivid depth --mod contrast lock --mod high drama --mod jade corridor --mod pale segmented worm --mod venom fanged maw --mod ichor sizzling glyphs --mod barbarian defiant silhouette --mod shattered pillars --mod phosphorescent glow --mod lightning strobe --mod scarred muscular form --mod blunt eyeless worm head --mod mythic arena --mod toxic stench atmosphere --mod Howardian register --mod clash of flesh and stone
The green jade halls had the stillness of a tomb that had forgotten its dead. No rat
scurried behind the carven panels; no lizard whispered over the floor. The barbarian
moved beneath serpent-carved pillars, sword low in one hand, while the walls
glimmered as if moonlight were imprisoned in the stone. He had seen temples where
priests fattened gods on blood and palaces where kings rotted behind gold, but
never a place where silence seemed to wait for a sound it already knew was coming.
It came from beneath him.
A wet grinding under the pavement, then a blow that heaved a slab of jade against
his boot. He sprang backward as the floor burst apart.
Something pale and ringed drove upward through the ruin, smashing blocks aside
hard enough to shake dust from the vaults. Its body was thicker than a man was tall
and slick with greenish slime that smoked on the stone. The head had no eyes that
he could see, no face at all, only a round red maw opening within pallid folds, armed
with inward-curving teeth that dwindled rank upon rank into darkness.
The thing struck before the last stones fell.
He leaped aside, but the edge of the mouth clipped his shoulder and spun him
across the floor. Teeth snapped behind him. He hit hard, rolled through slime, and
came up with his left arm numb from shoulder to wrist. The creature wheeled with
hideous speed, its body plowing through a pillar. Jade exploded across the hall.
The barbarian went in instead of back.
His sword bit where the pale rings narrowed behind the maw. Black blood burst hot
over his hand; the blade drove deep enough to grate on something hard within. The
creature convulsed and the wound vanished beneath folds of flesh. Its scream was a
subterranean bellow that struck the chest more than the ear.
A length of its body smashed him sideways.
He struck the base of a pillar and felt something tear under his ribs. Before he could
fill his lungs, the mouth came again. He thrust the sword crosswise between two
ranks of teeth and the jaws clamped on the steel. The shock nearly tore the hilt from
his hand. For one heartbeat he was bent backward beneath that red pit, staring past
hooks of ivory into a throat pulsing open to receive him.
He could release the sword and live perhaps another second.
Instead he stepped into the mouth.
His left hand seized a fleshy ridge inside the jaws. Teeth raked his forearm to the
bone. He wrenched himself upward as the creature tossed its head, ripped the
sword free, and drove the point through the soft roof behind the first ring of teeth.
The beast went mad.
It flung him clear. He struck the floor, lost the sword, and rolled as the creature's
body crashed where he had fallen. The impact broke the jade into a web of cracks.
He clawed upright on one good arm while the thing thrashed through the chamber,
battering columns into ruin and painting the green walls with black blood.
His sword lay beneath the curve of its body.
He snatched up a shard of fallen jade as long as his forearm and waited.
The creature reared, maw opening, blood pouring from the wound above it. When it
lunged he did not dodge. He sprang beneath the descending mouth, drove the
jagged stone into the wound his sword had made, and threw all his weight against it.
The creature's own charge finished the stroke.
The shard vanished to his fist.
The pale body knotted. The mouth snapped shut inches from his head. Then the
thing collapsed with such weight that the remaining pillars shuddered. Its tail beat
twice, tearing loose a carved balustrade, and lay still.
The barbarian crouched beside it, blood running from his arm and breath sawing
through his teeth. Then he found his sword beneath the slack coils and hacked it
free. The slime on the blade stank of graves opened after rain.
Only then did he see the scars.
Old white furrows crossed the creature's underside, some broad as his hand, one so
deep that healed flesh had grown crooked around it. No sword had made that
wound. No spear cast by man had bitten so wide.
Behind the carcass gaped the hole it had torn through the floor.
Cold breathed from it.
Far below the broken jade, steps descended into blackness, older than the halls
above, their edges rounded by ages of passage. He bent to look, and somewhere
under those stairs stone grated slowly against stone.
The dead crawler moved.
Not with life. Its immense body shifted an inch across the floor as a tremor passed
upward through the foundations.
The floor stirred under his boots. Then, from a depth no torch could have reached,
came one long exhalation of air.
The barbarian straightened. Blood ran from his fingertips. His sword hung ready at
his side.
He looked once into the stairwell.
Then he backed away without turning his back.
