When Jesus said I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it which church was he referring to?
Protestant readers have generally interpreted "the rock" to refer to the Christian Church. Under this reading, Jesus is promising that the church will never be entirely overcome by death and/or the forces of Satan.

It's not only the strength to fight; it's also the strength to win. “Prevail” is a good translation; so is “overcome.” It's a military term. It's what an army needs to win the battle. But this is in the negative. Jesus is saying that the Gates of Hell—whatever they are—may fight the church but they will not win.
