Inside the country store, big oaken barrels filled with crackers and flour and sugar, a sign above the till advertises Herrick's Vegetable Pills for dyspepsia and colic and headaches, fever and ague. Under the grimy window there might be a counter full of notions like spectacles, sewing items, gilt jewelry, combs. Various notices are pinned to a bulletin board, church socials, turkey shoots, farm auctions.
A detailed painting of an old, rustic general store, early 20th century, with a warm, inviting atmosphere. The store is filled with various goods and ephemera, suggesting a hub of community life. A prominently displayed sign above a shelf on the right side reads "HERRICK'S VEGETABLE PILLS FOR DYSPEPSIA, COLIC, HEADACHES FEVER AND AGUE." Below this sign, there are shelves stocked with various bottled liquids, medicines, and packaged goods.
I saw a picture of a country store in an old book; they actually did have crackers just laying in barrels, and various other foodstuffs that weren't covered, just waiting to be weighed and sold. I guess the Cracker Barrel Restaurant name really reflects its roots.
Obviously, this preceded plastic!
