The Last Stop
The train slowed down. No whistle. No rattle. Just a gentle, vibrating hum, as if the air itself were whispering: "Now." Remy raised his head. Gertrude had fallen asleep—one wing lightly draped over his shoulder. He didn't wake her. He let her dream until the train stopped. The door opened. They stepped out—and stood in a place that seemed like an exhalation. Mossy Corner. A small village nestled between forest and water. A lake so calm it reflected the clouds. A pebbled path leading to a cottage with a round, blue door. A garden of herbs, a rope swing. No gold. No glitter. But... warmth. Peace. Welcome. Gertrude looked around. "This is... not treasure." Remy nodded. "No. It's better." They stayed. He planted lavender. She taught the squirrels to sing. They sometimes traveled—flew on the Everafter Express to faraway places, visited old friends, experienced new stories. But they always returned. To the cottage. To the garden. To the lake. One evening, as the fireflies danced and the tea smelled of apple, Remy asked: "And if someone asks us what we found?" Gertrude smiled. "Then we'll say: us." Because sometimes the greatest adventure isn't the searching, but the arrival.
