The Sri Lanka Elegant Scops Owl is one of the rarest and least-known owls in the world, found only in a few remaining patches of pristine wet-zone rainforest in Sri Lanka. It is critically endangered due to its extremely limited range and the rapid shrinking of its habitat.
This owl is small, with a beautifully patterned plumage of browns and buffs that provides perfect camouflage among mossy trunks and dense foliage. It has distinct ear tufts, large dark eyes, and a soft, melodious call rarely heard even by experienced ornithologists.
The species is nocturnal and a highly specialized forest dweller, feeding mainly on insects such as beetles, moths, and small arthropods. It nests in tree hollows within undisturbed forest areas—making old-growth forest crucial for its survival.
Because it avoids disturbed landscapes, the Elegant Scops Owl is most often found only in deep, untouched rainforest, especially in the Sinharaja region.
Conservation Note: Protecting its tiny remaining habitats is essential. Without intact primary rainforest, this owl faces a high risk of extinction.
